J Thorpe
It is possible that J Thorpe was not killed during the war but survived to become a Chelsea Pensioner. The role does contain all who served in both wars and this could have been a mistake as with the other errors already identified.
The only Thorpe that would appear to have any connection with the area is a John Thorpe who was baptised at All Saints on the 18th November 1877, the son of Samuel and Emma Thorpe. His father was a blacksmith and they lived in Markeaton. By 1881, his father had died and he was living with his mother at 30 Cedar Street Derby with his younger sister Elizabeth. The army seems to have been a family tradition as there are records for the Thorpe’s of Mackworth being in the army since 1785.
On the 5th March 1895, John joined the Sherwood Foresters where it is thought he served through-out the war and later became a Chelsea Pensioner.
